Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

Word count divided by 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed for general prose. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, which is a typical presentation pace.

How do you count sentences?

A sentence is a run of text ending in a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis that contains at least one letter or digit. That means "..." on its own is not counted, and "Wow!!!" counts as one sentence rather than three.

Does an emoji count as one character?

Yes. Emoji are counted as a single character even though most are stored as two or four bytes. The byte count is shown separately because that is what matters for database columns and SMS limits.

Word count for writing that has a limit

Most writing has a ceiling somewhere — an essay word count, a meta description that gets truncated in search results, a character limit on a form field. This counter updates as you type so you can see where you stand without switching tools.

The counts here are deliberately explicit about their rules, because different tools disagree. A hyphenated compound like well-known counts as one word. Numbers count as words. Sentence detection requires actual content, so trailing punctuation does not inflate the count.
